Allergy Alert Tests: What You Need To Know
Hi, I’m Pauline.
Today I want to talk about something crucial. Did you know even clients who have been colouring their hair for years can suddenly develop allergies? That’s why we prioritise allergy alert tests for everyone’s safety.
The importance of allergy alert testing
Allergic reactions to tinting products aren’t just rare occurrences you see in the news – they can happen to anyone and range from mild redness to severe responses. It’s a risk we simply won’t take with your health, which is why we test every client who needs it, every time it’s necessary.
Even if you’ve been colouring your hair for years without any issues, your body can change over time, explains Pauline. Allergies can develop unexpectedly, which is why it’s so important to keep up with regular testing.
What triggers tint allergies?
Your immune system sometimes overreacts to harmless substances, seeing them as threats. This is what happens with allergies.
In hair dyes (and lash & brow tints), the usual suspect is a chemical called PPD. Although safe for most, it can cause allergic reactions in some people, cautions Pauline.
“Even if your skin and scalp has always been fine with PPD, a recent tattoo or changes in your health can increase your sensitivity. We’re here to safeguard you against even from the smallest risk,” says Pauline. “It’s why we ask a lot of questions – it’s all part of keeping you safe.”
When is an allergy test necessary?
Our allergy tests are quick, easy, and complimentary. Here’s when we will do one:
- If it’s your first time at our salon, even if you’ve been tested elsewhere.
- If you’ve had a tattoo, temporary or permanent since your last visit.
- If you’ve experienced any reactions to products recently.
- Whenever we introduce a new product or brand.
For our regular clients, we keep track of when your tests are due. If you have not had your hair coloured with us in the last 6 months, you’ll need an allergy test done at least 48 hours before your appointment.
A warning about black henna tattoos
Black henna tattoos can catch people off guard says Pauline. These tattoos can sometimes contain high levels of PPD, which may make your scalp more likely to react to colour products – even if you’ve been fine in the past.
If you’ve had one, it’s important you tell us when booking your appointment as testing needs to be done at least 48 hours in advance.
What if you react to the test?
If you notice any redness, itching or swelling after your allergy alert test, let us know immediately. “We’ll work with you to find a safe alternative,” says Pauline. “Your safety always comes first, and there’s usually another way to achieve the look you want.”
